Simone Usai

I was born in Rome in 1986 and moved to South Africa with my family at the age of two, initially settling in Johannesburg before relocating to Cape Town in 2010. Growing up between two cultures, I have always maintained a strong connection to my Italian heritage, language and traditions, while proudly embracing South Africa as my home.

Professionally, I work as an East Africa Specialist at Asilia Africa, where I specialise in creating tailor-made safari experiences for international travellers. My experience in tourism and hospitality has strengthened my skills in communication, relationship management, organisation and working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

During the previous COMITES term, I was co-opted onto the committee as Sports Coordinator, contributing to community initiatives and helping strengthen connections through sport and cultural engagement.

One particularly memorable experience was assisting during the Italian national rugby team’s visit to Port Elizabeth, where I liaised with visiting Italian officials, supported the Consulate with logistical requests, accompanied officials to the match and helped create a welcoming atmosphere for Italian supporters.

I have also been actively involved with the Italian Club of Cape Town, organising regular football activities and supporting smaller community initiatives. I strongly believe that sport has a unique ability to bring people together, build lasting friendships and strengthen the sense of belonging within our community.

As a proud father and Italian living abroad, I recognise the importance of preserving our language, culture and traditions for future generations. Having spent almost my entire life in South Africa, I understand the value of maintaining strong connections with Italy while embracing the diverse society in which we live.

My decision to stand for COMITES comes from a genuine passion for our community and a desire to continue contributing in a meaningful and practical way. I hope to bring my enthusiasm, experience and collaborative approach to the committee, encouraging greater participation, strengthening relationships and helping build an inclusive and connected Italian community across the Cape.
